Summer Drive-In

The Northwest Clinic hosted a summer drive-in movie night featuring Despicable Me for our patients and their families last Thursday, August 1st.

Going to the movies can be an overwhelming and scary experience for our patients and their families. Theatres are dark with tons of stairs, and people are often impatient or stare. We provided our patients and their families with a comfortable, non-intimidating movie-watching environment. We had ST’s, OT’s, and PT’s present during the movie to accommodate each child’s special needs.

Weeks leading up to the event, patients painted cars using cardboard boxes and paper plates. The patients also made snack necklaces with cookies, pretzels, fruit loops, and other goodies to munch on during the movie. We also set up a sensory tent complete with bubble wrap and foam mats for the children to play in during the movie!

To truly create that drive-in experience, each child received “money” upon entering the clinic and “bought” their movie tickets, pizza, and snacks.

All of the children and their families had a blast. The evening was a huge hit and we cannot wait to host another movie night!
