Spot It!

A Fun Visual Perceptual Matching Game

On a recent medical trip my daughter was playing in the pool when another little girl arrived on the scene.  It was instant friendship.  Rounds of monkey in the middle, Marco Polo, and diving for torpedoes in the pool.  They met up each night at the pool and would have oodles of fun.  They decided on their last night together that they would meet in our room and play card games.  We said we had Uno and Skip Bo and they acknowledged knowing how to play those games and would bring one of their own.  They arrived with a game called, Spot It!  Never hearing about Spot It! or having played it, we decided to play it first.  They explained the rules and the two girls began to play.  After a couple of rounds, I knew the game was fun and had redeeming qualities when the girls would have short periods of silence followed by bursts of laughter and giggles.  Funny thing was all of the adults who were standing or sitting around the girls played silently to themselves without disengaging from the game for several rounds only giving the game more credibility.  Then, at the end of each round was an instantaneous and unanimous statement from both girls “Let’s play it again!”

Spot It! is a game produced by Blue Orange game company.  It is made for age groups 7 years to adult.  It has 5 different games that can be played with 2 to 8 players.  It is played with a stack of round cards with each card imprinted with 8 symbols from a game selection of over 50 symbols.  One and only one symbol will match between any two cards.  The basic premise of the game is to be the first one to recognize the matching symbols on the cards and call it out.  The symbols will be the same shape and color but may be a different size.  Due to the games small size it is very portable and can be thrown into a home health therapy bag or taken along as a fun activity to multiple places (i.e. appointments, restaurants, road trips, flights) instead of an electronic game.  The game also comes with instructions on how to play the 5 different games using the same cards.  Blue Orange also makes other versions of Spot It! including Spot It! Alphabet for ages 3 – 6 years, Spot It! Numbers and Shapes for ages 3 – 5 years, and Spot It Jr.! Animals for ages 4 – 7 years.  They also have Spot It! Basic English, French and Spanish for ages 6 to adult.

From a therapy stand point, Spot It! is a great game to use during therapy or as part of a home program.  Spot It! is a good activity for working on visual motor, coordination, and perceptual skills.  It can also be a fun way to work on expressive and receptive language, speed of vocalization with accuracy, shape, color, and size recognition, direction following, and language processing.  It also requires the players to use social pragmatics by learning to take turns and being a good sport whether you are winning or loosing.

Whether you are a parent, a therapist or both, you will enjoy using this game for its fun yet therapeutic qualities.  Give it a try and let us know what you think.  I believe you will be pleased.
